Why it helps that I’ve studied these programmes
A tutor who knows the subject is useful. A tutor who has done your kind of programme knows more: how quickly the first semester moves, how one module quietly depends on another, and what it feels like to face a deadline in the same week as a test. I started the Higher Certificate with no coding experience, so I remember the hard parts clearly.
I finished that Higher Certificate top of a class of more than 200 students, and received the Full Stack Impact Award 2025 at the Emeris Durban North Student Top Achiever Awards. Now I’m in my second year of the Bachelor of Computer and Information Sciences in Application Development, so the BCIS workload is something I’m living through right now, not remembering from years ago.

Independent, and clear about what that means
To be plain about it: this is my own private tutoring. It isn’t run by, affiliated with or endorsed by The IIE, Emeris Education or Varsity College. I study at Emeris Durban North and I’m President of Emeris Voice, but nothing on this website is an official Emeris or IIE service.
It also means there are things I won’t do. I won’t write or complete any assessment for you, and I don’t hand out answers to past papers. That isn’t only about rules. If I did your work, you’d still walk into the exam unprepared. What I will do is explain the concepts behind the work, so you can do it yourself.

Modules and topics I can help with
These are the areas I’ve studied myself, across the Higher Certificate and my degree so far. Rather than guess at module codes, send me your module outline or the topic you’re stuck on, and I’ll tell you honestly whether it’s something I can help with.
If it’s a module I haven’t reached yet in my own degree, I’ll say so instead of winging it. You deserve a tutor who knows the material, not one reading it the night before alongside you. Where I can’t help, I’d rather point you back to your lecturer and the support your campus already offers.
- Programming in Python and Java: logic, algorithms, object-oriented programming, debugging and code structure
- Web development: HTML, CSS and JavaScript, layout and responsive design
- Database development: data modelling and SQL
- Mobile application development: React Native and mobile-first thinking
- Systems analysis and design: working out requirements and drawing UML diagrams before anything is built
- Information systems, networks and human-computer interaction: how systems, businesses and real users fit together

How sessions help before tests and exams
Many students reach out when a test is close. That’s fine, and we can still do a lot. We start by finding the gaps: which concepts you can explain and which ones you’ve only memorised. Then we rebuild the weak spots with fresh examples, new angles and practice questions, until you can work through them on your own.
If you have past papers or practice questions from your course, we can work through them together. You attempt each question first, and I coach the method, so you learn how to approach that style of question instead of memorising one answer. There’s more on how I run revision on the exam preparation page.

Started with no coding experience? So did I
I chose this field at an Emeris Durban North Open Day, in my final year of school, after a Faculty of Science and Technology presentation. I had no coding background at all. The first months of the Higher Certificate meant learning everything from the ground up, which is exactly why I never assume you already know the basics.
If that’s where you are now, you’re not behind. You’re at the start. As I told IOL, “It’s about being consistent, asking questions, using the support around you.” I’ve written more about what worked for me in no coding experience to top of class.

What a Higher Certificate student said
“Coming into the Higher Certificate with zero coding background was terrifying. Jorryn broke down the logic in a way that finally made sense to me, and never once made me feel stupid for asking. By the second term I was the one explaining concepts to my group. That shift in confidence was worth every session.” Kayla Reddy, Higher Certificate, Mobile App and Web Development
Kayla’s review is one of three published on this site, each with the student’s name and course. Ethan Naicker’s also comes from the Higher Certificate, and Nomvelo Dlamini’s from First-Year Computer Science. You can read all three, in full, in the reviews section.

Online for other campuses, in person in Durban
If you’re at Emeris Durban North or elsewhere in Durban, in-person sessions can be arranged in the Durban area. If you study at another campus, online, or from home somewhere else in South Africa, sessions run by video call with screen sharing. Either way, sessions are usually 60 to 90 minutes, and rates are a personalised quote.
Thinking of enrolling rather than already studying? Requirements, fees and accreditation questions belong with the official IIE and Emeris websites, not with me. For a student’s view of what the programme is actually like, read my guide to the IIE Higher Certificate in Mobile Application and Web Development.
